Teaching the Vikings - Stories [Resources for teaching viking history to 4-6 year olds]

A Teaching Guide for teachers of Primary School History: A package of resources and information for primary school teachers to use in their History classes. These activities focus on Viking Age stories and are designed to introduce 4-6 Year olds to stories as a part of the past.
Technology No. UCCIP002

Developed by UCC Archaeology, these resources will help teachers to bring the life of the Vikings alive for 3 & 4th class.  Based on UCC research expertise the Teaching the Vikings platform uses state of the art knowledge of the Vikings to explore the concept of Viking ships, using archaeological, historical and artistic source evidence and to discuss the importance of ships in war, trading, and funerary rites.

The package provides tools for teaching approaches, assessment and linkages to the curriculum to enable the child to

    * become familiar with aspects of the lives of the Vikings
    * examine and become familiar with evidence from the periods studied, especially evidence which may be found locally

This lesson introduces the students to different Viking stories.

Students will learn

  • why Vikings told stories (education and entertainment) and
  • who told these stories (the Skald/Storyteller).
  • two different Viking stories
  1. the Story of Night and Day and
  2. the Wedding of Thor.

The children will use timelines and picture order sheets to recap the stories as well as colouring pages to explore artistic expressions of stories.
