"Teaching the Vikings" - Ships [Resources for 3rd & 4th Classes (Primary School)]
A Teaching Guide for teachers of Primary School Histroy: A package of resources and information on Vikings ships for 3rd and 4th class teachers (9-11 years old)

Developed by UCC Archaeology, these resources will help teachers to bring the life of the Vikings alive for 3 & 4th class. Based on UCC research expertise the Teaching the Vikings platform uses state of the art knowledge of the Vikings to explore the concept of Viking ships, using archaeological, historical and artistic source evidence and to discuss the importance of ships in war, trading, and funerary rites.
The package provides tools for teaching approaches, assessment and linkages to the curriculum to enable the child to
- * become familiar with aspects of the lives of the Vikings
- * examine and become familiar with evidence from the periods studied, especially evidence which may be found locally
- * record the place of peoples on timelines
Students will
- explore how people used longships to travel around the Viking world.
- discuss what materials were used to make longships, construction methods, and navigation.
- undertake a (virtual) field trip to see some surviving Viking longships at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo.
- Use poetry and role play, students will reflect on the experience of living through Viking raids.
